Redact an SSN

Cover US Social Security numbers before you share a form, statement, or scan. AnyRedact marks likely SSNs in PDF text — you always confirm the preview before anything is final.

  1. 1Upload the PDF, JPEG, PNG, or WebP that has the SSN on it.
  2. 2Review any auto-detected XXX-XX-XXXX matches in PDF text, and draw a shape over anything on an image or scan.
  3. 3Confirm every page, then download the redacted file.

Frequently asked questions

Can AnyRedact find an SSN in a PDF?

When the PDF has a text layer, AnyRedact looks for the standard XXX-XX-XXXX Social Security number pattern and marks matches for you to confirm. You should still read every page — a scanned or photographed page has no text layer to search.

What if the SSN is in a photo or a scanned page?

Draw a rectangle, circle, or polygon over the number yourself. Scanned pages and photos are treated as images, so nothing is detected automatically until you mark it.

Where do SSNs usually hide on a form?

Common spots are the top corner of tax forms (W-2, 1099), the signature block on loan and lease paperwork, insurance claims, and background-check authorizations. Check headers, footers, and any attached ID photocopies too.

Should I redact a partial SSN, like the last four digits?

Yes, if it appears at all. The last four digits are still enough to help with identity theft when combined with a name and date of birth, so cover them the same way as a full number.

Does redacting the visible number remove it from the file?

The download is a new, flattened file with your covers painted in — the original text underneath is gone in the exported copy. Always confirm the preview first, since a redaction cannot be undone once you download.
