Redact a passport number

Cover passport numbers on bookings, copies, and scans before you share them. Review the machine-readable zone as well as the printed number — both carry the same digits.

  1. 1Upload the PDF or image of the passport page.
  2. 2Confirm auto-detected matches in PDF text, or draw a shape over scans and photos.
  3. 3Cover the MRZ too, then download the redacted file.

Frequently asked questions

Does AnyRedact detect passport numbers?

In PDF text it matches common passport number patterns used in several countries. Formats vary a lot between countries, so always review the page and draw extra covers if a number wasn't caught.

Can I redact a passport scan?

Upload the JPEG, PNG, or WebP of the photo page, draw a rectangle, circle, or polygon over the number, then download. Detection only runs on PDF text, not on scanned images.

What is the MRZ, and do I need to redact it too?

The MRZ is the two lines of machine-readable text at the bottom of the photo page. It repeats the passport number, date of birth, and expiry date in a compact format — it's easy to redact the printed number and forget the MRZ still shows it, so cover both.

What else is on a passport page besides the number?

Full name, date and place of birth, nationality, photo, and signature all sit on the same page. Decide which of those you also need to cover before you download.

Should I redact a passport photocopy attached to a form?

Yes — a photocopy of a passport page attached to a visa, loan, or rental application carries the same sensitive fields as the original. Treat it the same way: cover the number, the MRZ, and any other field you don't want shared.
